- Healthcare technology adoption is essential for successful implementations
- There are common obstacles to achieving widespread tech adoption
- Key strategies for overcoming these obstacles
Earlier this week, I touched on the importance of healthcare technology adoption for successful implementations. It doesn’t matter how efficient and organized the deployment – if the end-user doesn’t consistently incorporate the solution into the day-to-day workflow, the implementation will not be successful.
Our own Halo Health researchers conducted a study on the drivers of technology adoption, particularly for clinical collaboration software. However, in addition to discussing drivers, it’s important to talk about the things that get in the way.
Several factors can negatively impact healthcare technology adoption. And, these common obstacles are largely within the control of the deployment team.
Obstacles to healthcare technology adoption
The following are three of the most common obstacles to widespread adoption:
- Focusing on the solution instead of the organizational impact
It’s hard to get excited about yet another tool being added to healthcare delivery. It’s easy, however, to get excited about what this new tool will do. How it will help make lives easier. How it will positively impact care delivery. Want to drive adoption? Start here.
- Relying Largely on C-Suite Champions
Yes, it’s important to have the C-Suite champion the change – to share why it’s important and going to be positively impactful for the organization. But it’s not enough to generate widespread technology adoption. End-users need to be champions of the technology amongst their peers.
- Making Healthcare Technology Adoption Optional
You hear it all the time in healthcare – “We’re different.” “Our department is more complex.” “That just won’t work for us.” However, uneven adoption will doom a project to failure, which is why leaders should make new technology mandatory.
The above are just a few of the reasons why widespread healthcare technology adoption can be thwarted.
